USC’s No.21 women’s football team heads to Tempe and Tucson

THIS WEEK – USC’s No.21 women’s football team, currently leading a six-game winning streak, hit the road for their second week of Pac-12 play, facing Arizona State on Thursday and then Arizona on Sunday.

SERIES AGAINST. USS – USC have a 17-8 record against the Sun Devils since the teams first played in 1996. ASU won last season’s game, 1-0 at Tempe. Prior to that, USC had won five straight games in the series.

SERIES AGAINST. ARIZONA – USC has a 21-4-2 all-time series lead since the teams first played in 1994. The Trojans have won seven straight wins over the Wildcats since 2014.

BACK IN THE RANKS – USC returned in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll this week, coming in at No. 21. Trojans are also 27th in RPI ratings.

LAST WEEK – The Trojans opened the Pac-12 game at home last week, beating the previously undefeated Oregon State 2-1. USC fell behind 1-0 early in the game, but Bethune Cross equalized in the 23rd minute and Penelope Hocking scored the winner in the 85th minute.

GROOVES – After losing its first two games of the year, USC has won six in a row and shut out four of its last five opponents. The Trojans outscored their opponents 19-3 during this span.

ON THE EDGE OF HISTORY – Penelope Hocking is currently one goal away from matching USC’s all-time goalscoring record and two away from breaking it. Her 47 career goals are currently second on the list, behind Isabelle Harvey’s 48 goals.

BETHUNE CROSS – Bethune, who was named to the All-Pac-12 first team in its inaugural season last spring, leads USC in goals and points so far this year (6 goals, 2 assists, 14 points ). Bethune has scored in five of USC’s eight games and is tied for 4th in the conference with her six goals. The junior midfielder recorded the second multi-goal game of his UCSB career, scoring twice in the 3-0 victory. She was also named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the equalizer and providing the assist to the game winner against Oregon State.

SAVANE DEMELO – DeMelo enters the 2021 season as a 5th year senior, seeking to close a career that has already seen her win three All-Pac-12 honors and once All-American recognition. DeMelo is currently 6th on USC’s career assists list with 22 (leader: 39) and holds the 6th best single-season assists total in program history with 10 assists in 2018. She scored USC’s first goal of the game this season, posting an 11th-minute strike against Utah Valley. She also has an assist.

ANNA SMITH – After battling for the starting position with All-American Kaylie collins Over the past three years, Smith has entered the 2021 season as the Trojans’ starting goaltender and the only goaltender in the USC roster with college experience. So far this year, Smith has played every minute in goal, recording four shutouts. She was named Pac-12 goalie of the week on 6/9 after two clean sheets and a PK save against No. 16 Michigan and West Michigan on the road. Smith has two PK saves this year, is 5th in the Pac-12 with 33 saves and his .825 save percentage is the 5th best in the conference. For his career, Smith is 17-5-1 and 7 shutouts.


– First-year student Aaliyah farmer started every game except one (Senior Day) as a Trojans midfielder, helping the team to four shutouts while sitting third in points. She scored her first career goal at home against Utah Valley, then claimed the overtime victory over the No.16 Michigan. Farmer has two goals and two assists (6 points).
– First-year student Brooklyn courtnall has started and played every minute as the Trojans’ center-back so far this year, helping the team to four shutouts. She is the only player other than GK Anna smith having played every minute for USC. Courtnall posted his first career assist against CSUN, providing the assist on Hannah white strikes in the 71st minute.
– First-year student Simone jackson, the nation’s No. 3 rookie in the last recruiting round, scored his first career goal against Utah Valley earlier this year. She also recorded her first assist at UC Santa Barbara.
– After suffering injuries his first two seasons, Anne Blanche has become a real offensive threat off the bench for USC, posting two goals and one assist in seven games played.
– First-year student Simi awujo scored his first career goal against Western Michigan (9/5) and the freshman Julia gomez scored his first goal against CSUN (9/19)

SCHEDULE 2021 – The Trojans are once again playing one of the toughest schedules in the country this year. The 18-game roster includes seven home games and 11 road games, with USC facing seven opponents who made it to the NCAA tournament last year and nine who are currently ranked or receiving votes in the Coaching Poll. pre-season.

LIST DEPTH – The Trojans enter the season with a formation of 35 players. USC returns 20 winners from last season, with four All-Pac-12 winners, three All-Region players and one First-Team All-American. The Trojans also brought in the country’s No. 4 recruiting class and added the All-Pac-12 transfer Jada talley.

HERMANN WATCH – USC Penelope Hocking and Savannah DeMelo were both named to the preseason watchlist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, college football’s highest award. Both players are no strangers to the Hermann Trophy radar, with Hocking being named a semi-finalist for the award last season and DeMelo being on the watch list each of the past three seasons.

LAST SEASON – The 2020 season has been postponed to spring 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Trojans finished 7-3-4 overall and 6-3-2 in the Pac-12 game, placing 2nd in the conference standings. USC made their 7th straight playoff appearance, continuing a streak that began when head coach Keidane McAlpine arrived in 2014. USC was fired from the playoffs in their opener (2nd round / 1st round bye) falling to Ole Miss in PK’s.
