NEW YORK, September 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Project Liberty welcomes MeWe, a global social network with 20 million members, to the Decentralized Social Network Protocol (DSNP). Today, MeWe announced plans to integrate DSNP, a revolutionary open-source Internet protocol released by Project Liberty last year, into its technology architecture. The DSNP frees the social network from closed and proprietary platforms, securing individual data rights and creating a forum for open collaboration.
By using DSNP technology, MeWe doubles down on its core values of privacy and user control and reinforces its commitment to providing an authentic social media experience free from algorithms, amplification and manipulation. This integration puts MeWe on the right path to becoming the largest decentralized social media platform in the world.
“If you look at social media today, it’s clear that we need an entirely new design to empower users and support healthier digital communities,” said Frank McCourtFounder of Freedom Project. “The DSNP opens a new path for social media platforms, like MeWe, who want to give their members more control, greater privacy and an authentic sharing experience. We are excited to see MeWe harness the power of technology to lead the way forward.”
DSNP decentralizes online social networking and, because it is governed by the community that uses it, lays the groundwork to shift the balance of power in the web economy from social media companies to individuals.
“MeWe was created to uphold the fundamental human right to privacy while enabling people to enjoy the best things about social media: family, friends, and discovering a community,” said Jeffrey EdellChairman and CEO of MeWe. “Integrating DSNP into our growing platform further aligns our technical infrastructure with our core values of privacy and user control. By offering this option to our members, we reinforce MeWe’s commitment to giving users control of their social media experience. We look forward to showcasing the benefits of technology designed to empower users and enable healthier digital communities.”
MeWe will begin enabling its members to move to a decentralized system in 2023, starting with features such as a secure, passwordless login option. MeWe is working with its global user base and group admins to engage its members and solicit their feedback at every step of this transition. Over time, this decentralized technology will democratize the way MeWe operates, enabling input into product development initiatives and social media platform policies.
“Today, social media is a monopoly with too much power in too few hands. MeWe is pioneering a new, values-driven way of doing social media. Decentralization empowers everyone to participate and challenges control in the hands of the people. It’s an exciting vanguard to be a part of,” said Steve Wozniakco-founder of Apple and member of the advisory board of MeWe.
DSNP (Decentralized Social Networking Protocol), released by Project Liberty in 2021, is an open-source protocol that establishes a universal social graph that is no longer controlled by a specific application. This new technology frees the social network from closed and proprietary platforms, securing individual data rights and establishing a forum for open collaboration. DSNP sets shared standards and enables shared network effects across the entire ecosystem of applications and services that will take advantage of this new public resource. Individual digital rights are secured at the protocol level and preserved regardless of the application users are using.
MeWe is a social network designed to put privacy first and is committed to giving users more control over their data and social media experience. The company offers a groundbreaking “Privacy Rights Statement” that gives users control over their data and news feeds. MeWe lets users join groups, engage their friends, and give them full control without ads or algorithms. With 20 million members worldwide and unique features like the MeWe two-way camera, MeWe hosts over 600,000 member-run interest groups. MeWe encourages genuine engagement among users by not manipulating or amplifying content and protects its members with strict terms of service.
MeWe was named Fast Company’s Most Innovative Social Media Company of 2020 and America’s Best Entrepreneurial Company of 2019 by Entrepreneur Magazine. In 2016, MeWe was honored as a Startup of the Year finalist for “Innovative World Technology” at SXSW.
