New ITV drama Ridley is set to premiere tonight (Sunday August 28) at 8 p.m.
It stars Line of Duty frontman Adrian Dunbar as the titular Alex Ridley, a retired detective who now runs a jazz club. He is lured out of retirement by a former protege and the temptation to try and solve a kidnapping case that still lingers over a decade ago.
Also starring former Hollyoaks actress Bronagh Waugh, Terence Maynard and Call the Midwife’s Georgie Glen, Ridley is a crime drama set in the north of England across Lancashire and Yorkshire that promises twists and turns and thrills while throughout its four episodes.
But is the ITV crime drama based on a true story, or is it a complete work of fiction? Read on for everything you need to know.
Is Ridley based on a true story?
Although not based on any particular event or specific person, Ridley draws on the real-life stories of retired police officers who joined the force in their final years as a consultant.
Detectives coming out of retirement to consult with police on investigations have become more common due to funding cuts and resource allocation.
The cast also took advice from serving police officers for detail and accuracy.
As Bronagh Waugh says, “I always like to start with books and online research, and get testimony from retired detectives. I also find it very interesting to try to see from a female point of view what it is like for women detectives who hold high positions in the ranks, to see what they have had to deal with.
Series creator Paul Matthew Thompson also discussed Ridley’s basis on the real-life phenomenon of brass who don’t retire: “We had a very unique take on what it’s like to be a retired copper returning to work. Many police officers have now been taken over because police forces realize that they still have a lot to offer in an advisory role.
“I also think they would agree that the police have changed enormously since they worked there. So you have to readjust to go back to work, but also readapt to a workplace that has probably changed a lot since they were there.
Ridley will air on ITV at 8 p.m. on Sunday August 28, 2022. If you’re looking for more to watch, check out our TV guide. Visit our Drama hub for all the latest news.
