Iowa State 2021-22 Athlete of the Year nominees



The Big 12 Athlete of the Year 2021-22 nominees will be highlighted each day at 10:00 a.m. CT and 2:00 p.m. CT listed alphabetically by school until Friday, July 22.

Winners will be announced the week of July 25. Stay tuned to and the conference’s social media platforms to see the rest of the nominees.

The star candidates this afternoon are Ashley Joens and Breece Hall from Iowa State.

Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year Nominee

Ashley Joens; Basketball

  • First player to win the Cheryl Miller Award in consecutive seasons.
  • NCAA career leading active scorer (2369 points).
  • Averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
  • Received All-America honors from WBCA, Associated Press and USBWA.
  • Earned unanimous first-team All-Big 12 honors for the third time in his career.

Brece Hall; Soccer

  • Consensus All-American, First Team All-American (AP, AFCA, Walter Camp, Sporting News).
  • Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year for the second time, making him the fourth player in league history to earn the honor.
  • Selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.
  • Ended three-season career owning/sharing 11 school records.
  • Rushed for a touchdown in his last 24 games, breaking the NCAA’s all-time record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown.
