At 5:55 p.m. on April 7, 2022, 80-year-old Gladys M. Verhulst of rural Ottumwa was escorted to the gates of heaven with a song and love from her daughters and others who were with her at Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa. .
She was born on April 5, 1942 in Iowa City to Harold and Elsie Kurst Floyd. Gladys married Gary Lane Steele on June 27, 1959 and they later divorced. She married Michael Joseph Verhulst on August 15, 1986 and he predeceased her on April 25, 2018.
Gladys worked for over 10 years as a cook for Eddyville Schools and was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
She loved to knit, crochet and read.
Survived by his four daughters, Cynthia (Donald) Gordon of Ottumwa, Sherri (Dennis) Small of Las Vegas, NV, Wanda Steele of Kirkville and Tamra Cone of Fremont; three stepsons, Mark (Wendy) Verhulst of Peosta, Kevin Verhulst of Ottumwa and Ryan Verhulst of Washington, DC; 12 grandchildren, David, Amber, Elizabeth, Jennifer, Sheena, Staci, Shannon, Heather, Carter, Gabriel, Desiree and Azalea; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Wells of Anamosa and Judy Floyd of Maquoketa; one brother, Ted Coffman of Washington State.
She was predeceased by an infant daughter; a great-grandson, Trever Lane Gordon; two brothers, Kenny and Raymond; three sisters, Hazel, Bonnie and Linda; and his adoptive parents, Jim and Bettie Coffman.
Visitation will be open after 9 a.m. Thursday, April 14 at Reece Funeral Home with family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be Friday, April 15 at 1 p.m. at Reece Funeral Home with Dan Smith officiating. For those unable to attend, the service can be viewed live on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials can be made at the Heartland Humane Society, Serenity Hospice House, or for Masses at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
