Rereata Makiha – Alcohol a no no

One of the people who helped shape Matariki’s revival said linking the celebration to alcohol advertising was a big no-no.

One of the people who helped shape Matariki’s revival said linking the celebration to alcohol advertising was a big no-no.

Rereata Makiha says the expert panel tasked with advising on the date and format of the first public holiday on Friday recognized that some commercialization would be inevitable.

But alcohol is not the way to mark the winter rising of the star constellation Matariki.

“All the pataka were full of kai and you could sit down and plan next year and take your time to do things like that and I think those are some of the practices that we hope to come back to where you don’t. don’t have to hurry and keep pushing yourself every day, but learn to rest, take time with families and gather whānau at that time and plan whānau activities for next year” , says Mr. Mahika.

He also doesn’t want to see people shooting fireworks to mark Matariki.
