Game time forecast: Partly cloudy, 84 degrees.

MID SEASON CLASSES: Coach, new pitcher but low scores elsewhere
Play Notes: The Tigers claim their first series victory of the season against the White Sox. The South Siders had won nine of the teams’ 11 games heading into the three-game series. Manning was bombarded (nine hits and nine runs against Cleveland) in his last outing and passes a tough test on Independence Day: Chicago’s offense ranks top 10 in OPS and races, but rests on timely steps and shots instead of the long ball. Giolito faces Detroit for the third time this season and the 13th of his career. He saw the Tigers in back-to-back games last month, allowing four earned runs in seven innings and suffering a loss on June 5, and surrendering two earned runs in six innings for a decision without a decision (which the White Sox ultimately won) June 11. In 13 innings against the Tigers in 2021, he struck out 18, walked one and allowed five homers.
