Outgoing Chief Health Officer Ashley Bloomfield says the Covid pandemic has taught the health system a lot about working with communities, including Maori.

He says Maori were the first to step up to fight Covid in February and March 2020, evoking memories of the impact of the flu epidemic 100 years before.

While Dr Bloomfield has been criticized by Waipareira chief executive John Tamihere for being slow to release data that Maori organizations wanted to use for their vaccination campaigns, he says there is a lot going on behind the scenes .

“One of the things that came out of that was that we were able to work with John and iwi as well as the privacy commissioner to find a way to get that data to where it was most needed so that what whānau who weren’t in contact with health services could be accessed and one of the best results is that there are over 100,000 New Zealanders who previously had no contact with services health, but with the vaccination program are now linked, so that’s really good,” Dr Bloomfield said.
