ABC postpones compulsory registration to the iview service

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation has postponed for at least six months its decision to introduce mandatory registration for its online iview service from July 1.

An ABC spokesperson said in a statement Thursday that the company, which is an entity fully funded by taxpayers, had intended to introduce compulsory registration in July and August.

“[We] decided to slow things down to make sure our audience understands the benefits they will receive from setting up an ABC account and the ways we manage and protect their personal information, ”the spokesperson added.

iview is a service that allows viewers to view programs that have already been broadcast or, in some cases, not yet broadcast. Many commercial TV channels offer similar services, but they require registration as it is used to monetize the service.

In May, when iTWire asked the ABC why registration was made compulsory, the company mentionned it was intended to help users following a survey carried out in 2020.

“Connections help us ensure we deliver relevant content and functionality for all Australians. This data shapes the programming we create and the products we build, enabling us to continually improve the types of programming we produce. and acquire “, iTWire was said at the time.

But the ABC remained silent when asked why, if so, registration was not made voluntary so that those who wanted to enjoy the benefits claimed could register, while others were not required to do so.

The ABC spokesperson added: “We continue to work with the Australian Information Commissioner’s Office to ensure that we are the industry leaders in terms of the use of personal data, in accordance with the trust that Australians tune in to the ABC.

“We intend to introduce mandatory connections for ABC iview by the end of the year.”
